The Ashanti South Regional Police Intelligence Directorate has disrupted a planned robbery operation in Obuasi, arresting two suspects linked to both a recent armed attack on a foreign national and a separate plot targeting a local distribution company.
The suspects, identified as Iddrisu Fuseini, alias “Iddi,” and Shaibu Mohammed, also known as “SM” or “Cicinati,” were picked up in separate intelligence-led operations following what police described as credible information about an impending robbery in the mining town.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, Fuseini was arrested on April 16, 2026, at his hideout in Bedieso, Obuasi, after police acted on intelligence about a planned attack by an armed gang. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to being part of a six-member group that carried out a robbery at the residence of an Indian national at New Baakoyeden on April 12.
The gang is said to have made away with GH¢150,000 during the operation.
Police investigations indicate that the attack was allegedly facilitated by an insider—an employee of the victim identified only as Ibrahim—who is said to have tipped off the gang that his employer kept substantial sums of money at home.
Further intelligence work led to the arrest of the second suspect, Mohammed, on April 20 at Gausu, also within Obuasi. He is said to have admitted involvement in planning the earlier robbery and disclosed that the group had advanced plans to stage another attack on a distribution company located near Mawuli Hotel.
The police statement further revealed that both suspects are already standing trial before the Obuasi Circuit Court in connection with a separate robbery case involving GH¢600,000, suggesting a pattern of organised criminal activity.
Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched for other members of the syndicate, identified as Khalifa, Edward, Prof, Waddle, Ebbe, and the alleged informant, Ibrahim.
Police say efforts are also underway to retrieve weapons believed to be in the possession of the gang, including a pump-action gun and a locally manufactured pistol.
The Service has assured the public of its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations to curb violent crime in Obuasi and beyond.
