A 5-Day Bootcamp for STEM Clubs at the Obuasi Robotics Centre, sponsored by AGA,
on the theme: “Building Tomorrow’s Innovators”, has ended at Obuasi.
Thirty-six participants from Primary four to JHS Two, drawn from Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipalities who participated in the programme were taken through computational thinking and coding fundamentals, physical computing and electronics, mechanical engineering and 3D design, Robotics and autonomous systems.

Other areas they were trained in include innovation and community problem solving and communication and presentation skills among others.
The participants at the end of the programme came out with Smart Energy Management System, RFID Card Smart tap water system, Smart Irrigation system, Smart waste bin and Smart white stick for the blind.
Mr Edmund Oduro Agyei, AGA Community Relations Manager, noted that the successful hosting of the very first STEM Bootcamp in Obuasi and indeed in the Ashanti Region reflects the company’s commitment to education and youth development, particularly in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
“As a company, we strongly believe that by equipping our young people with skills in innovation, creativity and problem solving, we are laying the foundation for a transformed Obuasi and a brighter future for all,” he said.
Mr. Oduro Agyei pointed out that over the past five days the 36 students have been challenged to think critically, create boldly and explore new possibilities and said this testifies a bold step in positioning them to become the problem solvers and leaders of tomorrow.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Mr. George Alfred Koomson noted that in most cases as it is in Ghana where the majority of the students dread science and Mathematics and avoid it like a plague, initiatives as this could go a long way to allay the fears and rather build the confidence of the child.
Mr Isaac Ankomah, Ashanti Regional STEM Coordinator on behalf of the Regional Director of Education thanked AngloGold for organizing the programme.
To the participants, Mr. Ankomah said, “the skills you have acquired here will help you to think better, solve problems and turn ideas into youthful solution.
“With discipline, curiosity and hard work, you can become innovators, engineers, scientists and technology leaders of tomorrow.”
The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Faustilove Appiah Kannin, said the future of Obuasi must go beyond its rich history in mining.
To AngloGold, she stated, “we are grateful. Your investment in education and skills development will yield long term benefits not just for Obuasi, but for Ghana as a whole.”
Mr Augustine Quagraine, Programmes Assistant of Dreamoval Foundation and co-facilitator of the Bootcamp in his remarks said by the exposure, the 36 participants are equipped and are going back to their schools to expose their colleagues to the good things they have learnt.
