Justice Richard Adjei-Frimpong, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and Chairman of the Planning Committee for its 150th anniversary, has announced a series of activities to commemorate the historic milestone of the country’s highest court.
Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the Judicial Service Headquarters in Accra, Justice Adjei-Frimpong described the anniversary—dubbed Supreme Court@150—as a moment to reflect on the institution’s legacy and chart a path for the future.
He noted that the court, established under the Supreme Court Ordinance of 1876, represents the foundation of Ghana’s modern legal system. Despite a history marked by political upheavals, military interventions, constitutional suspensions, and public criticism, the Court has remained resilient.
“In all this, the Court has survived and thrived,” he stated, adding that it has consistently upheld its mandate of defending the Constitution, protecting fundamental human rights, and safeguarding democratic governance.
Justice Adjei-Frimpong underscored the landmark contributions of the Court, including the interpretation of Article 181(5) to ensure parliamentary approval for international business agreements involving the state.
He also cited decisions that have expanded democratic rights, such as allowing prisoners to vote and affirming that citizens do not require police permits to embark on demonstrations. He further referenced the Court’s critical role in resolving presidential election disputes, which has contributed significantly to maintaining political stability in Ghana.
The anniversary will be celebrated under the theme: “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future.”
According to him, the theme reflects the need to recognise the achievements of past jurists, celebrate the Court’s present contributions, and prepare for emerging challenges within the global legal landscape.
The celebrations will be officially launched on April 16, 2026, at the Cedi Conference Centre, with the main events scheduled to run from July 1 to July 31, 2026.
Planned activities include public lectures and symposia featuring local and international dignitaries, legal outreach programmes, moot court competitions, sporting events, a sod-cutting ceremony for an anniversary project, a grand durbar, a dinner, and a thanksgiving service.
Justice Adjei-Frimpong called on the public and stakeholders to support and participate in the celebrations, describing the milestone as a significant moment in Ghana’s legal and democratic journey.
