Masked men have crushed seven homes at Jetrokope, a little village at the bank of the Lower Volta at Big Ada.
Numbering about 12, the men, allegedly carrying sledgehammers, heavy clubs and canes, levelled six mud houses and one two-bedroom concrete building, which were occupied for over six decades.
The occupants, mainly farmers and fishermen, told The Chronicle that five masked men abruptly stormed Jetrokope on December 31, 2025 to instruct them to vacate the land before New Year’s Day.
“Then the next day at about 11 am, about 12 masked people dashed here and without any word, knocked down our buildings with their sledgehammers.
“They instructed us to sit on the ground as they demolished our buildings. We could not salvage any item,” Joseph Sosu, 71, told The Chronicle at Jetrokope.
“As if that was not enough – the masked men destroyed our coconut trees and plantain farms, our sources of livelihood,” the frail victim narrated.
“We could not utter a word as they ordered us to keep quiet or they would flog us with the canes. So, we were about 33, including children, kept quiet and watched them flatten our buildings,” Joseph Sosu explained.
Sebuabe Apeku, a victim, who pulled out his phone to take videos of the demolition, was allegedly lashed in his palm.
“One of the masked men said my palm would not leave traces of bruises so he told one of the boys to lash my palm. I lost count of the strokes,” Sebuabe Apeku, 27 recounted his ordeal.

Joseph Sosu, however, was emphatic that the land did not belong to them, but said because they had been living on the land for about 63 years, “whoever owned the land should have respectfully notified us months earlier enough to prepare adequately for relocation. We are not disputing the ownership of the land at all.”
As of the time of visit, the other displaced occupants, Mr Sosu said, were perching at Foah, Pute, Tamatoku and Dogo, all in East Ada and on the other side of the Lower Volta.
When The Chronicle checked the East Ada District Police Station of any reported case of such violation, there was not any.
However, the police promised to follow up the case.
