The race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama is intensifying, as a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics reveals notable shifts in public preference among leading contenders within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The poll, released by the Chief Executive Officer of Global InfoAnalytics, Mr. Mussa Dankwah, indicates that the Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has overtaken NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as Mosquito, to claim second position in the succession race.
According to the survey, Dr. Forson now commands 23% approval, up from previous polls, pushing Asiedu Nketia—long considered a strong successor—to third place with 22%.
The poll places Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, at the top of the pack with 26% approval, maintaining his lead among general voters.
Commenting on the findings, Mr. Dankwah attributed Dr. Forson’s rise to public confidence in his economic management.
“Buoyed by the economy, the poll suggests Ato Forson may have the momentum to lead the party, at least judging by general voters’ preferences,” he noted.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Mr. Dankwah further explained that the re-entry of Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang into the succession conversation appears to have drawn support from most candidates—except Dr. Forson. She currently ranks fourth with 11% approval.
Meanwhile, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah follows with 7%, while Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa places fifth with 6%.
Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, now Board Chairman of GCB Bank PLC, ranks sixth with 3%, while Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, trails with 2% approval.
The survey underscores a rapidly evolving political landscape as the NDC begins to look beyond President Mahama toward the 2028 elections.
