Police in Ada have arrested nine Nigerians, including a female, suspected to be among convicts who broke jail from the Owerri Correctional Centre in the Imo State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Their names were given as Freedom Yusuf, 25, Emmanuel Obinnah Chiedozie, 27, Steve Eyenuku, 33, Enebeli Lucky, 29, Yommi Usmah, 29, Kelli Ekureni, 33, Obi Onuora, 38, Patrick Chanar, 47 and Bless Eyenuku, 25.
The Ghana police, after preliminary interrogation, handed the suspects over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for profiling.
A fortnight ago, over 1,800 convicted prisoners being held at the correctional center in Nigeria broke jail when men armed with deadly weapons and explosives attacked and subdued the armed guards.
No group has since claimed responsibility for the act.
Information available to The Chronicle indicates that their arrest follows suspicious movements at Azizanya, near the Volta River estuary.
On Sunday, April 18, 2021, intelligence to the police on their movements was rife. The security agency, therefore, prepared for them.
Sources close to the operation hinted The Chronicle that the suspected jail breakers travelled by road from Benin to Togo, before joining a small boat, which ferried them to Anyanui, in the Anlo District of the Volta Region.
After disembarking from the boat, the suspects crossed the Volta River to Ada Foah and boarded an Ashaiman-bound commercial vehicle, before being nabbed by the police.
The paper gathers that when they were searched, Nigerian identity cards and currency, the Naira, were found on them.
Sources indicate that the suspects were not prepared to divulge information about themselves.
This compelled the police to hand them over to the Tema Regional Command of the GIS for further action.
