The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kwadaso Constituency in Kumasi, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has donated Ghana Education Service (GES) approved standard reading books and mathematical sets valued at GH¢50,000 to the Kumasi Metropolitan Education Directorate last week Friday.
The items are meant to be distributed to 21 schools from three circuits in the Kwadaso Constituency.
They were funded through the MP’s share of the Common Fund, and formed part of several programmes and activities initiated by the MP to support educational development, particularly, to boost the interest of students in reading.
The outgoing MP, therefore, charged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to put in place measures that can help address the situation, so that the standard of education can be improved.
The gesture follows the identification of low reading ability and mathematical skills amongst basic schools, considered as major threats to quality education in the country.
According to the MP, the habit of reading story books and novels does not only help improve one’s ability to speak good English, but also helps to explore things around our environment.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto expressed concern that the standard of reading at the basic level had significantly reduced, a situation which, he said, could seriously affect Ghana’s educational development, if not addressed.
The Metro Director of Education, Mr. Alexander Attah Asante, admitted that there was low reading ability amongst basic schools, and said his outfit was doing its best to arrest the unfortunate situation.

He said through the support of USAID and other development partners the GES has revived reading competition programmes in Basic and Junior High Schools.
