Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has backed Augustine Boakye to become an important player for the Black Stars despite continuing to introduce the midfielder from the bench.
Boakye once again came on as a substitute during Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Asked about his continued use of Boakye as a substitute, Queiroz insisted that he has never been afraid to give new players an opportunity and believes the Saint-Étienne midfielder will gradually establish himself in the national team.
“Never in my life have I been afraid to play new players in my team. Augustine Boakye will become a key player for the Black Stars step by step,” Queiroz said.
Boakye has been pushing for a bigger role with the national team after making his Ghana debut in the 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the opening qualifier.
The midfielder has made an impact in both appearances, but has started from the bench on each occasion.
Following another substitute appearance against The Gambia, Boakye will now hope to earn a starting role when Ghana return to action in November for the doubleheader against Somalia in the AFCON qualifiers.
