AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Brandon Thomas-Asante invited to replace injured Prince Adu Kwabena in Ghana squad

Ghana forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has been handed a late call-up to the Black Stars squad after Prince Adu Kwabena was ruled out of the upcoming international assignments through injury.

The Coventry City attacker has been invited by head coach Carlos Queiroz to replace Adu Kwabena, who suffered a head injury while on club duty with Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

Adu Kwabena was introduced in the 70th minute during Viktoria Plzen’s Czech top-flight clash against Slavia Prague on Sunday but was unable to finish the game after sustaining the injury late in the encounter.

The former Bechem United forward was stretched off in the 90th minute, raising concerns over his availability for Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures.

His absence has now paved the way for Thomas-Asante to join the Black Stars squad as Ghana prepare for a busy international window.

Thomas-Asante has established himself as one of the attacking options available to the national team and will provide additional competition in the forward line as Queiroz prepares his squad for the upcoming fixtures.

Ghana are scheduled to travel to face Cote d’Ivoire on September 24 in a crucial AFCON 2027 qualifying encounter before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.

The Black Stars will then face Morocco in an international friendly, with the fixture providing Queiroz an opportunity to further assess his players.

Thomas-Asante’s invitation comes at a time when Ghana have already had to make adjustments to their squad, with Mohammed Kudus also withdrawing from the international window.

The Coventry forward will now be hoping to make the most of his opportunity as Ghana begin preparations for their important September assignments.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars technical team will continue to monitor Adu Kwabena’s recovery following the head injury sustained in the Czech Republic.
