Two â??Catch Them Youngâ?? referees to officiate at WAFU B U17 Girls Cup

Ghanaian referees Mercy Boakyewaa Gyan and Linda Ayimpoka Asogro have been selected for the WAFU Zone B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

The pair, who are products of the Catch Them Young Refereeing Policy of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), are among 14 young officials chosen for the tournament, which will be played from September 15 to September 28.

Gyan and Asogro are part of a group of young referees identified through the Young Talents Refereeing Course held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram in March.

Two young officials were selected from each of the seven member associations of WAFU Zone B, allowing the referees to move beyond training and gain experience in competitive international football.

The decision forms part of the Zone’s strategy to expose promising officials to the demands of the game at an early stage of their careers.

The tournament in Yamoussoukro will provide the young officials with valuable experience as they work alongside more established referees and officiate competitive matches.

The assignment marks an important step in the development of Gyan and Asogro, allowing them to improve their technical and decision-making skills while experiencing the pressures of international football.

The selection also highlights the potential of Ghana’s Catch Them Young Refereeing programme, which is designed to identify and develop refereeing talent from an early age.
