Asante Kotoko have mutually agreed to part ways with forward Johnson Oppong Owusu. The 28-year-old was one of several players expected to leave the Porcupine Warriors as part of a major squad overhaul following a disappointing 2025/26 season.
Oppong Owusu joined Kotoko on a two-year deal in July 2025, arriving with a wealth of experience from spells with Dreams FC, Portuguese side C.S. MarÃtimo, Czech club FC ZlÃn, and Albanian outfit KF Kukesi. He described the move as a “dream move” to the Ghanaian giants.
Despite a bright start that saw him score an early opener against Young Apostles, the forward failed to establish himself as a key player. Reports suggest he struggled for regular minutes and did not meet the club's expectations in training and competitive matches.
Oppong Owusu’s departure is part of a wider squad overhaul at Kotoko, with up to ten players expected to leave the club as they prepare for the 2026/27 season. The club finished eighth in the Ghana Premier League last season, falling well below their own high standards.
The forward is now a free agent and will be looking for a new club to revive his career. Given his experience both domestically and in Europe, he is expected to attract interest from several clubs.
For Kotoko, the focus now shifts to rebuilding under head coach Eric Tinkler as they aim to challenge for the league title once again.
