Referees from the Southern Sector have begun the mandatory assessment process in Koforidua as the Ghana Football Association intensifies preparations for the 2026/27 football season.
The officials are currently undergoing a written examination to assess their knowledge and understanding of the Laws of the Game.
The exercise forms part of the GFA's qualification process for match officials, with referees required to demonstrate the technical knowledge and decision-making skills needed to officiate matches across the Association's competitions.
The written examination is the first stage of a wider assessment programme. The referees will subsequently undergo physical fitness tests and other technical evaluations before they can be cleared for appointments during the new season.
The GFA Referees Department is using the process to ensure that only technically sound, knowledgeable and physically prepared officials are available for match appointments.
Referees are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of the Laws of the Game, decision-making principles and the latest interpretations governing modern football officiating.
The Koforidua exercise follows similar assessments conducted for referees in the Northern Sector as the GFA continues its nationwide preparations for the new campaign.
The Association has also continued to strengthen referee development through regular training, examinations, fitness tests and FIFA and CAF-supported capacity-building programmes.
Further fitness examinations and technical assessments will be conducted as the GFA moves towards finalising the list of referees eligible to officiate in the various competitions during the 2026/27 season.
