WAFCON 2026: This tournament has been tough - Alice Kusi

Black Queens forward Alice Kusi has admitted that the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been a challenging tournament .

Ghana secured their place in the quarter-finals after drawing 1-1 with Mali in their final Group D fixture on Thursday, with Evelyn Badu’s first-half header cancelled out by Kadidiatou Diabate after the break.

The result was enough to send the Black Queens through to the knockout stage as group runners-up, keeping their hopes of reaching the global showpiece in Brazil alive.

Kusi acknowledged the difficulty of the competition but believes the team is improving with each game as they continue their pursuit of World Cup qualification.

"This time around, the WAFCON has been tough. We can't compare it to last year, but we are taking it step by step. I know individually, we are trying our best to make sure that Ghana will be at the World Cup."

The forward added that qualifying for the World Cup remains the team’s main target and every player is committed to making it happen.

"This is our first target, so we are still bringing the best out of ourselves and making sure that, at the end of everything, we will achieve our dream."

The Black Queens will now face Malawi in the quarter-finals on Sunday, August 9, in Rabat, with the four semi-finalists earning qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
