Black Queens coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Ghana have taken valuable lessons from their defeat to Cameroon and are determined to produce an improved display against Mali in their decisive final Group D match at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana face Mali on Thursday at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca knowing a draw will be enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals, while their opponents require victory to progress.
The Black Queens opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Cape Verde before suffering a narrow 1-0 loss to Cameroon, a result that left qualification for the knockout stage to be decided on the final matchday.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Björkegren admitted his side were disappointed with parts of their performance against Cameroon but believes the team has responded positively.
"We were a little bit unhappy with the start in the previous game, even if we felt that we came back pretty well in the second half. But we have talked about it. We have learned from the game. We know that we need to play a little bit better tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that we will do that."
The Swedish coach expects Ghana to produce a stronger display as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
The last four teams at WAFCON 2026 will qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, adding further significance to Thursday's encounter.
