Joseph Anang honoured as first active St Patrick's Athletic player to feature at World Cup

Black Stars goalkeeper Joseph Anang has been presented with a commemorative frame to mark his historic achievement of becoming the first active St Patrick's Athletic player to be called up to a FIFA World Cup.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper, who is on loan at the League of Ireland side from West Ham United, was part of Ghana's 2026 World Cup squad. While he did not feature in any matches, his selection marked a significant milestone for both the player and the Dublin club .

St Patrick's Athletic chairman Garrett Kelleher presented Anang with the frame in recognition of the feat. The moment was captured by the club's media team, with the goalkeeper visibly proud to receive the honour .

Anang joined St Patrick's Athletic on loan in January 2025 from West Ham United and has established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper. The move came after West Ham triggered an extension clause to keep him at the club until 2027 .

Born in Ghana, Anang represented England at youth level before committing his international future to Ghana. He made his senior debut for the Black Stars in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Sudan in November 2025.

His call-up to Ghana's 2026 World Cup squad was a reward for his consistent performances at club level, where he has been one of the standout goalkeepers in the League of Ireland .

With his loan spell at St Patrick's Athletic set to continue for the 2026 season, Anang will be looking to maintain his form and push for more international recognition ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and beyond.
