CAF opens bidding for 2028, 2032 and 2036 Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially opened the bidding process for member associations wishing to host the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement, CAF invited its 54 member associations to submit bids to host the continent's flagship football competition. CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the process is already underway, with several countries expressing interest and submitting proposals.

Several nations have already expressed interest in hosting future editions. CAF has received a "number of exciting bids" from potential host nations. Among the confirmed bids is a joint proposal from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to host the 2032 tournament.

CAF President Motsepe confirmed that the tripartite candidacy is officially in the process, stating the three countries "will have as good a chance as everybody else" of hosting the finals.

Morocco, Ethiopia, and a joint bid from South Africa and Botswana have all declared their interest in hosting the 2028 edition. Lesotho has also officially thrown its hat into the ring to co-host the 2028 tournament. Libya has publicly stated its intention to host the 2028 tournament, though CAF has not yet confirmed this bid.

CAF has developed the AFCON 2028, 2032 and 2036 bidding framework with the support of PwC and its technical, financial and external legal advisers. The framework establishes a transparent, credible and ethical process for the evaluation and selection of host countries.

The next edition, dubbed the PAMOJA 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

CAF President Motsepe confirmed that the organisation has received "numerous attractive approaches from leading international marketing and commercial rights agencies interested in partnering with CAF".

CAF plans to host a major senior men's national team competition every year, except during FIFA World Cup years. The tournament will also switch to being held every four years after the 2028 edition. CAF is also considering expanding the tournament from 24 to 28 teams.
