Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has challenged his players to keep Africa's World Cup dream alive by defeating Colombia in Friday's Round of 32 clash in Kansas City.
Africa enjoyed a record tournament in the expanded 48-team World Cup, with nine nations progressing beyond the group stage. However, the continent has already seen Ivory Coast, DR Congo and Senegal exit the competition, all after surrendering leads in heartbreaking fashion.
Queiroz believes Ghana now have a responsibility to fly the continent's flag and improve Africa's record in the knockout rounds.
"It is another challenge for us," he said.
"We have to improve these statistics tomorrow."
The Portuguese coach said his players understand the significance of the occasion, not only for Ghana but for African football as a whole.
"It is on our shoulders to add another African team to the next round. That is our duty."
Queiroz also highlighted the mentality of his squad, insisting Ghana's greatest strength extends beyond technical ability.
"The Ghanaian players are skilful and explosive. They are very strong in one-on-one situations."
He believes the Black Stars' fighting spirit is what truly defines the team.
"This team has heart and soul. They fight until the end to get a result. That is in their DNA. It is not something you can buy or build."
The former Portugal, Iran and Colombia coach said those qualities have made him proud to lead the Black Stars.
"They are great fighters and I am very proud to be their coach."
Ghana face unbeaten Group K winners Colombia on Friday, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake. Victory would also ensure Africa maintains a presence in the tournament's final 16 after a series of narrow knockout exits for other representatives.
