Curacao and Ivory Coast face off in their decisive final Group E clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, with both sides chasing a historic achievement at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The Elephants are aiming to secure a place in the round of 32 for the first time in their history, while Curacao continue their remarkable underdog journey and remain in contention to produce one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
Curacao head into the encounter boosted by a key result after earning their first-ever FIFA World Cup point in a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Ecuador. Despite facing heavy pressure and allowing 27 shots, the Blue Wave survived thanks largely to an outstanding display from goalkeeper Eloy Room.
That result kept alive the possibility of Curacao becoming the lowest-ranked nation ever to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup. However, they are likely to need victory against Ivory Coast to turn that dream into reality.
Recent form has been inconsistent for the Caribbean side, who have won just one of their last seven matches while drawing twice and losing four times. Nevertheless, they have managed to score in four of their last five games, although three of those matches ended in defeats by margins of three goals or more.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, arrive in Philadelphia determined to respond after suffering a painful 2-1 defeat to Germany in their previous outing. The Elephants had been on course to secure qualification before conceding a decisive goal in the 94th minute.
Despite that setback, the African side remain favourites to progress and are seeking to record two wins in the same World Cup tournament for the first time. However, pressure could become a factor for a team whose last four international matches have all been decided by a single-goal margin.
One encouraging statistic for Ivory Coast is their attacking consistency on the global stage. Among nations that have played at least three World Cup matches, the Elephants boast the highest scoring percentage, having found the net in 10 of their 11 World Cup games.
Thursday’s clash will also mark a historic first meeting between the two nations. It will be Curaçao’s first-ever match against African opposition, while Ivory Coast are preparing for their first World Cup encounter against a CONCACAF nation.
Ranked 31st in the FIFA World Rankings, Ivory Coast enter the game as favourites against a Curacao side positioned 50 places below them. However, with qualification still hanging in the balance, the Elephants will be wary of underestimating a team already making history in the tournament.
Curacao possible starting lineup: Room; Brenet, Gaari, Obispo, Floranus, Fonville; Chong, Comenencia, L. Bacuna, J. Bacuna; Locadia.
Ivory Coast possible starting lineup: Y. Fofana; Doue, Kossounou, Agbadou, Konan; Sangare, Kessie, Inao Oulai; Diallo, Bonny, Diomande.
The match between Curacao and Ivory Coast is scheduled for Thursday, June 25, with kick-off set for 20:00 GMT.
