Iran have reportedly threatened to boycott the 2026 World Cup tournament amid security and fan-conduct concerns.
The tournament, set to kick off on Thursday and jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has already been overshadowed by controversy surrounding the participation of the Iran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Iran officials have raised concerns with FIFA regarding the possibility of “unauthorized flags” or hostile chants directed at the team during matches. The Iranian stance suggests that any such incidents could prompt match officials or team management to take drastic action, including halting play.
As per Iran Sports Minister, Donyamali the Asian side expects strict enforcement of stadium regulations to ensure that matches involving the national team are not disrupted by political demonstrations or provocative behaviour from supporters.
Iran are drawn in a competitive Group G alongside Belgium national football team, Egypt national football team, and New Zealand national football team.
They are scheduled to open their campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, before facing Belgium on June 21 and concluding the group stage against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The group has already attracted significant attention due to its competitive balance, but the latest political developments have added an additional layer of uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation.
Further reports indicate that the Iranian Football Federation recently withdrew its allocated ticket quota shortly before the start of the tournament. The decision has raised concerns that supporters who had already arranged travel plans may be unable to attend matches.
This move has intensified speculation about internal disagreements and logistical challenges within the Iranian camp just days before the opening of the competition.
With the World Cup set to begin imminently, attention is now turning to how FIFA will manage security and crowd control for matches involving Iran, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding the team’s fixtures.
Despite the off-field uncertainty, Iran are still expected to proceed with preparations for their opening match, though questions remain over whether diplomatic and organizational tensions could escalate further during the tournament.
