Senegal is preparing a bid to host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations following comments made by the country’s Minister for Youth and Sport, Khady Diene Gaye, before the National Assembly on Monday.
According to local media reports, the minister clarified that 2032 refers to the intended hosting year for the tournament and not the deadline for submitting the country’s bid dossier.
“Senegal is indeed preparing its bid dossier in order to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2032. However, the dossier will not be submitted in 2032. That date refers instead to the year envisaged for hosting the competition in our country,” she explained.
If the bid is successful, Senegal would host the continental tournament for the second time in its history, 40 years after staging the competition in 1992.
The country is expected to rely on key sports infrastructure including the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium and Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor. Reports also indicate that additional facilities are planned as part of preparations for future international sporting events.
Senegal’s football reputation has grown significantly in recent years after winning the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon.
