2026 World Cup: Mohammed Kudus' absence will be a big blow to Black Stars - Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed concern over the potential absence of Mohammed Kudus from Ghana’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The 25-year-old is currently nursing an injury which could force him to miss the tournament in North America.

Speaking to Channel One TV in an interview, Gyan, who played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups in Germany, South Africa and Brazil, respectively, said Kudus remains one of the Black Stars’ most influential players because of his creativity, vision, and attacking intelligence.

According to him, the team will undoubtedly feel the absence of the midfielder, whose style of play provides a unique spark that is difficult to replicate.

Gyan, however, urged the technical team to quickly adjust and find alternatives capable of filling the gap left by the injured player, stressing the importance of squad depth in major international competitions.

The country's and Africa's top goalscorer in the World Cup also noted that although Kudus’ injury is unfortunate, the Black Stars must remain focused and adopt tactical solutions that will keep the team competitive against Mexico and in future World Cup assignments.

Ghana is in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars, making their fifth appearance at the global tournament, will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
