American-Ghanaian midfielder Ronald Donkor delivered a standout performance as New York Red Bulls drew 4-4 with DC United in a wild night at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Donkor set the tone early, first teeing up Julian Zakrzewski for the opener on 15 minutes before calmly finishing himself six minutes later to put the hosts 2-0 up and in full control.
DC responded through Tai Baribo before the break, but Donkor again made the difference after half time. With the score at 3-3 following goals from Jorge Ruvalcaba, Jackson Hopkins, and a second from Baribo, Donkor slipped a clever pass into Ruvalcaba’s path for Red Bulls’ fourth, restoring their lead at 4-3. Baribo, however, completed his hat trick on 80 minutes to snatch a point for the visitors and deny Donkor’s side a memorable win.
Even without the victory, Donkor’s goal and two assists underlined his growing influence in midfield, earning him one of the highest ratings on the pitch. Red Bull New York now turn their attention to Saturday’s trip to face FC Cincinnati in MLS, where Donkor will look to build on this outstanding display.
