Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has said former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo failed to meet expectations at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), despite continued backing for the national team’s technical setup.
Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, was dismissed after consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.
His exit also comes after Ghana missed out on qualification for AFCON 2025, although he earlier led the team to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the decision, Mr Adams said the GFA had shown considerable patience with the technical team but ultimately saw little evidence of progress on the pitch.
He stressed that while the association maintained its support and belief in the coach’s project, results did not reflect the level of improvement expected, prompting the need for a change ahead of the global tournament.
“They [the GFA] kept the coach and carried him along. They were expecting to see some improvement and changes, but not much has been seen,” he said on the KSM Show.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term contract to lead the Black Stars into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, with early focus on squad evaluation, assembling his technical team, and fine-tuning tactical preparations ahead of the tournament.
The former Real Madrid and Iran national team coach will have his first opportunity to assess the squad during next month’s friendly against Mexico, before Ghana wraps up preparations against Wales on June 2.
Ghana, who will be making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
