Public Relations Officer of Berekum Chelsea, Albert Kwabena Diawuo, has broken his silence following a deadly armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus on Sunday night.
The Ghana Premier League side was ambushed shortly after their Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the domestic football scene.
The attack left six players and club officials with minor injuries, while forward Dominic Frimpong tragically lost his life after being shot. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, Diawuo revealed that the team had no security escort during their journeyâa situation he described as routine for the club.
“There was no security on our team bus from Samreboi to Berekum. We normally travel for away matches without security. We go, play our game, and return without any incident. It was only yesterday that we encountered this robbery attack between Bibiani and Nkoso,” he said.
Recounting the terrifying ordeal, Diawuo explained that the team bus drove into an ambush on their return journey.
“After losing to Samartex 1996, we were heading back when, between Bibiani and Nkoso, the driver spotted gunmen lying in wait. They immediately opened fire. The driver tried to reverse the bus, but the attackers rushed towards us and continued shooting directly at the vehicle,” he narrated.
Diawuo further disclosed that the club does not typically lodge overnight after away fixtures, opting instead to return home immediately after matches.
“Normally, we don’t spend the night after our away games,” he added.
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety and security of clubs traveling across the country for league matches.
