German-Ghanaian striker Ragnar Ache struck a crucial second-half goal as FC Koln beat Werder Bremen 3-1 to finally end their long wait for a Bundesliga win.
Leading 1-0 at the break through Saïd El Mala’s early penalty, Köln were searching for a cushion when Ache delivered on 65 minutes, finishing clinically to make it 2-0 and cap an excellent centre-forward display.
Werder briefly threatened a comeback after Romano Schmid pulled one back from the spot with just over a quarter of an hour to play, but the hosts held their nerve. Deep into stoppage time, Mio Backhaus turned a cross into his own net to restore Köln’s two-goal advantage and seal three deserved points, backed by a noisy RheinEnergieSTADION crowd.
Ache’s performance underlined his importance to Köln’s survival push in 2025/26, taking the 27-year-old to 27 Bundesliga appearances with 7 goals and 4 assists this season.
The result lifts Köln and offers renewed belief after an eight-game winless run in the league. Next up, they travel to face St. Pauli on Friday, April 17, where Ache will again be central to their attacking hopes.
