Berekum Chelsea have provided details of the armed robbery attack on their team bus following their Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex, an incident that claimed the life of youngster Dominic Frimpong.
The club confirmed that Frimpong died as a result of the attack, while others sustained injuries, throwing the team and the wider football community into mourning.
In an official statement, Berekum Chelsea said the team was attacked while travelling back to Berekum from Samreboi, with armed men blocking the road to halt their journey.
According to the statement, the attackers, described as masked and wielding guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse to safety. Players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.
The club revealed that one player sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received initial treatment before arrangements were made for transfer to a regional facility.
Berekum Chelsea expressed gratitude to a police patrol team for their swift response, as well as members of the media who helped circulate information quickly. The club also acknowledged the support of residents of Ahyiresu, who provided temporary shelter for players and officials in the aftermath of the attack.
The statement further recognised assistance from Bibiani Gold Stars and extended appreciation to the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt response during the crisis.
The club assured the public that further updates would be provided as the situation develops, while expressing hope for the injured player’s recovery.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security for teams travelling for domestic competitions, with growing calls for stronger safety measures across the league.
