Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has expressed high hopes for Ghana’s newly unveiled yellow home jersey, stating his desire for the kit to replicate the "luck" and success the national team enjoyed during the 1990s.
Speaking after receiving the kit, Ayew noted the profound symbolic value of the design, which serves as a nostalgic tribute to the era when his father, Abedi Pele, and other Ghanaian icons dominated the continent.
Ayew, recently appointed as the substantive captain by head coach Otto Addo, emphasized that wearing a kit reminiscent of those worn by his "idols" carries significant emotional weight for the current squad.
“I hope it [new yellow home jersey] will bring us luck like in the early, late 90s. It’s very important, especially when you have your former idols wearing this type of jersey. Hopefully it will take us very far.”
The new collection, launched globally on 19 March in New York, blends modern performance technology with deep cultural storytelling.
The home jersey features a white base adorned with intricate Adinkra symbols and a central "Black Star" representing national pride.
In contrast, the away kit sports a vibrant "Sunny Yellow" palette, drawing inspiration from the energy of Accra’s Makola Market and traditional Kente patterns.
This fixture marks the beginning of a crucial European tour for Ghana, who have been drawn into Group I for the World Cup alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
Following the clash in Vienna, the team will travel to Stuttgart to face four-time world champions Germany on Monday, 30 March.
