Bayer Leverkusen winger Ernest Poku believes his recent form in the Bundesliga validates his decision to move to Germany, noting a significant improvement in his clinical efficiency in front of goal.
After making the jump from AZ Alkmaar in August 2025, the Dutch youth international has quickly become a vital component of the Bundesliga side’s attacking rotation, already nearing his career-best scoring figures.
Reflecting on his development, Poku admitted that while his pace and dribbling made him a constant threat during his time in the Eredivisie, his final product often lacked the necessary polish.
During his tenure at AZ, he managed six goals and 14 assists across 79 appearancesâa return he felt did not accurately reflect his potential.
"If you look at that time, I had a lot of opportunities and I was threatening, but in terms of return, that was still too low," Poku stated. "That's what I wanted to improve this season, and I'm pretty successful."
The statistics back up his confidence. In 40 appearances for Leverkusen this season, Poku has already registered five goals and seven assists.
His ability to translate his "menacing" style into tangible results has been a boon for the German side, particularly in domestic play where he has found the net five times in 25 Bundesliga matches.
By matching his AZ goal tally in significantly fewer games, the 22-year-old has silenced critics who questioned whether his style would translate to a more physical league.
