Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over local rivals Nations FC in a tense Ghana Premier League clash at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors delivered a timely response after a run of inconsistent results, moving back into the top four and reigniting their title push.
Kotoko made a strong start and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Albert Amoah rose highest to head home the opener, giving the hosts a deserved advantage at the break.
With pressure mounting on interim coach Prince Yaw Owusu following just one win in their previous three matches, Kotoko showed improved attacking intent and control throughout the contest.
The game was put beyond doubt in the closing stages. Baba was brought down in the 80th minute, and captain Samba O’Neil stepped up to convert from the spot to make it 2-0. Deep into added time, Morifing Donzo was also fouled in the box, and the Guinean forward calmly converted his own penalty to seal a comprehensive win.
The result lifts Kotoko into third place, now six points behind new league leaders Bibiani GoldStars, boosting their hopes of mounting a late title challenge with eight matches remaining.
For Nations FC, it was a disappointing afternoon as they dropped to 11th place. Kotoko will next travel to face Aduana FC, while Nations return home to take on Berekum Chelsea.
