Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, has declared that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy will remain in the country, despite the controversial ruling that awarded the title to entity Morocco.
The Confederation of African Football shocked the footballing world on Tuesday night, after annulling Senegal’s AFCON 2025 success and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory, months after the tournament in the North Africa country.
The decision sparked widespread debate and controversy across Africa, with many fans and pundits questioning the ruling.
Speaking to Saudi media after leading Al-Hilal to a penalty shootout victory over Al-Ahli in the semi-finals of the King Salman Cup, Koulibaly did not hide his determination, affirming the AFCON title will remain in Senegal.
“It wasn’t handed to us; we won it. They can look on, but I’m keeping it. The trophy is here. It’s not going anywhere” he said.
The CAF Appeal Panel’s decision to reassign the title has sparked widespread debate, drawing criticism from fans, former players, and football pundits who argue that overturning the result undermines the integrity of the competition.
Koulibaly’s remarks serve as a rallying point for Senegalese pride, reinforcing the view that victories on the field cannot be erased by off-field rulings.
As the controversy continues to dominate headlines, the Lions of Teranga maintain their stance: the 2025 AFCON trophy belongs to them, secured through skill, teamwork, and determinationâvalues that no administrative decision can invalidate.
Koulibaly’s firm position also underscores the emotional and symbolic significance of the trophy for the team, ensuring that Senegalese fans worldwide will continue to celebrate their on-field triumph regardless of CAF’s verdict.
Meanwhile, the Senegalese Football Federation has threatened to contest the case at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.
