Former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has vowed to demonstrate his enduring quality in the Dutch Eredivisie, emphasising that his celebrated past means nothing in his new challenge with NAC Breda.
The 36-year-old Ghanaian international, who has joined the club until the end of the season with an option for another year, told the club's media that he is ready to meet expectations head-on. "That is why I am here. Every season is a new start, and your past does not count; that is football," Ayew said.
Ayew, a veteran of top European leagues with stints at Marseille, Swansea City, and West Ham United, arrives at a club fighting for survival. NAC Breda currently sits 17th in the 18-team league with just 14 points from 19 matches. Despite the high-pressure situation, the former Ghana captain remains unfazed.
"I know that there are a lot of expectations, but for me, that is what I have been through my whole career, so I am very calm about it," he stated confidently. "Very soon, I will be at my top."
Ayew will have the support and guidance of another Ghanaian icon at the club. Matthew Amoah, a former Black Stars striker who is now part of NAC Breda's coaching staff, has issued a clear charge to the new signing.
"I told him, 'This is what the fans want from you. You have to fight, because that’s why you are here, and if you fight for the fans, for the team, the rest will come by itself,'" Amoah revealed.
Ayew has made two substitute appearances since his arrival, and his integration will face an immediate and formidable test. NAC Breda's next match is against league leaders PSV Eindhoven on January 24, presenting the perfect stage for Ayew to begin fulfilling his promise to prove his worth in Dutch football.
