Liverpool’s Champions League campaign received a significant boost on Wednesday night as they dismantled Olympique Marseille 3-0 away from home, with Jeremie Frimpong leading the applause for the team’s all-round performance.
The Reds’ display combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing, giving Arne Slot’s side a statement victory in Europe.
Liverpool extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches and move closer to direct Champions League last-16 qualification.
The win lifted Arne Slot’s side to 15 points in fourth and kept them firmly in the top eight heading into the final round.
“I think it was a good performance. We defended really well, we attacked really well and created lots of chances. It’s a well deserved victory, so we’re really happy,” Frimpong said after the match.
He added that the result reflected a return to the form Liverpool had been seeking in recent weeks.
“Yes, for sure. I feel like we have been good, but we’ve just not been able to finish our chances. Against Burnley, we created so many, but we just couldn’t score. That’s football, you have to score to win.”
Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick, earning himself the man-of-the-match accolade.
“Yeah, I did my homework. I got told that if no-one is lying down maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall and no-one was laying down so I tried it, and it worked out,” Szoboszlai explained.
The goal set the tone for Liverpool, who maintained control throughout the match despite facing a Marseille side guided by Roberto De Zerbi, known for their tactical intelligence.
