The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has congratulated referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea on his outstanding achievements and exemplary representation of Ghanaian football officiating at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Laryea, who has been a FIFA referee since 2014, was the only Ghanaian referee selected among elite match officials to uphold the rules of the game at the AFCON in Morocco.
Entrusted with officiating the high-stakes fixture between Morocco and Nigeria in the semi-finals, the Ghanaian referee delivered outstandingly and earned praise for his handling of the match.
In a press release from SWAG at the end of the AFCON, it has applauded Daniel Laryea for making Ghana proud, arguing that his appointment to officiate the semi-final showdown is a testament to his competence and integrity.
“His appointment to officiate the AFCON 2025 semifinal between host nation Morocco and Nigeria was a powerful affirmation of his competence and integrity,” SWAG said in its statement signed by President Kwabena Yeboah.
SWAG is of the view that in a high-pressure encounter of continental significance, Daniel Laryea delivered an authoritative and composed performance, further reinforcing the confidence reposed in him by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In its statement, SWAG also praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its commitment to strengthening refereeing in Ghana and restoring credibility and integrity to football officiating after a challenging chapter in the nation’s football history.
“SWAG remains hopeful that this positive momentum will be sustained and enhanced, leading to the emergence of more Ghanaian referees at major CAF and FIFA competitions, and ensuring that Ghana’s refereeing fraternity continues to command respect across Africa and beyond,” the association added.
