A Sudanese journalist has expressed deep national gratitude to Ghana, crediting coach Kwesi Appiah for what he describes as a miraculous transformation of Sudanese football.
The emotional tribute from journalist Ibrahim Salih comes after the former Black Stars coach led Sudan to a historic 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nationsâtheir first win in the tournament in 13 years.
Salih placed Appiah’s contribution second only to divine intervention in Sudan's remarkable journey to the tournament in Morocco. "To be honest, after God, I believe that Kwesi Appiah has done a lot for Sudan," Salih said. "Nobody believed Sudan was going to qualify for AFCON."
He highlighted that the Ghanaian coach's impact extended far beyond tactics. According to Salih, Appiah’s greatest achievement was a profound psychological shift within the team. "But Kwesi Appiah has a lot more than training. He worked on their mentality and made our players believe that they can do it."
Reflecting on the national team's presence at the continental showpiece, Salih admitted, "To be in this place (Morocco for the AFCON), I didn't actually dream. And without him, I don't believe that we can do it."
The admiration has fostered a direct affection for Appiah's homeland. "We are so happy, and we love Ghana very well because Kwesi Appiah has done a lot for us, so thank you, Ghana," Salih concluded in an interview with Sporty FM, expressing a hope that Sudan can retain the coach's services for the long term.
The win has reignited Sudan's campaign, and they now need just a point in their final group match against Burkina Faso to secure a historic place in the AFCON knockout stages.
