A total of 121 tricycle (Pragya) operators in the Abosso community near Tarkwa have been trained on road safety practices as part of efforts to reduce accidents and promote responsible riding.
The training was organised by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authourity (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of Tarkwa, in partnership with the Abosso Pragya Association.
The initiative forms part of ongoing interventions aimed at improving safety awareness among commercial tricycle operators, who serve as a key mode of transport in many communities.
Participants were taken through various aspects of road safety, including the need for proper licensing and motorcycle registration, the use of helmets and other protective gear, adherence to speed limits as well as the dangers associated with drug and alcohol abuse while riding.

Speaking at the programme, the Safety Officer of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Mr. Peter Owusu, urged the operators to prioritise their safety and adopt responsible riding habits.
He reminded them that their lives were valuable and that their families depended on them, stressing the need to avoid reckless behaviours that could endanger their lives and those of passengers.
The Tarkwa Regional Commander of the MTTD, Mr. Joseph Akpaloo, also raised concerns about avoidable mistakes committed by some tricycle operators, describing such actions as unacceptable.
He assured participants of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to intensifying enforcement to reduce traffic violations and accidents involving tricycles and motorcycles in the area.
The programme ended with a call for continuous education, strict adherence to road safety regulations and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure safer roads in Abosso and nearby communities.
