Mobile Telecommunications Company MTN has indicated that it has stepped up its surveillance to clean up its systems of SIM card registrations whose authenticity is in doubt.
This exercise follows the complaints of vendors selling already registered SIM cards and others registering chips without the presence of subscribers.
The company fears the trend can make fighting mobile money fraud and other crimes perpetrated with mobile phones difficult.
Speaking to host Lantam Papanko on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, Northern Sector Head of MTN Mobile Money Stephen Asare pointed out that the company has a validation system in its back room with other monitors closely cross checking every registration that comes through its systems.
‘We have a team that is eyeballing, checking all the registrations that we are doing on the field to filter and take off the wrong registrations for the correct thing to be done. Alternatively, you can visit any of our service centres for any transaction and there we can realize that it is a wrong registration and we will support you to validate your registrations,’ he said.
He added that every registration appears on their systems with the name of the agent who took customers through the process and all such agents found to have compromised the system risk sanctions.
