A 23-year-old mason, Prosper Kouku, was given a 12-year prison sentence by a gender-based violence court for defiling a 14-year-old girl.
Kouku faced defilement charges. He entered a not guilty plea.
However, the court, which was presided over by Dora Eshun, found Kouku guilty of defiling the youngster following a lengthy trial.
Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, the prosecution's lead investigator, provided proof that Kouku had forced unprotected intercourse with the victim in the complainant's hallway after meeting her while she was carrying her bags home.
The complainant, a 63-year-old security guard who lives in Accra, is the father of the victim.
Kouku was the complainant's neighbor and is currently unemployed.
The victim traveled from her mother's home in Kasoa, Central Region, to Accra on July 31, 2024, around 2PM, in order to celebrate the holidays with the complaint.
Kouku saw the victim on the way home with her bags and started talking to her.
According to the prosecution, Kouku learned that the complainant had quit her job during the conversation.
The court learned that Kouku forced the victim to have unprotected sex with him in the complainant's corridor after following the victim to the complainant's home.
However, the prosecution said that when the complainant got home from work that same day in the evening, she saw that the victim's walking had changed.
The victim told the complainant about her experience when he questioned her.
The complainant gathered his companions, took Kouku into custody, and turned him over to the police on August 2, 2024.
In his investigative caution statement, Kouku denied the violation when questioned by the police.
According to the prosecution, the complaint was given a police medical paperwork authorizing the victim to be sent to the hospital for assessment and care.
There was evidence of forceful vaginal penetration and evidence of sexual assault, according to the medical report, which was approved by Dr. Prince E. M. Daitey, Clinical Care Coordinator at Maamobi General Hospital in Accra.
