The president of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, have reiterated their unconditional support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to an independent and sovereign state on the borders of 1967, with Al-Quds as capital, in line with the international law and UN resolutions.
The support was expressed in a joint statement released at the end of the state visit to Algeria by the president of the South African Republic, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the seventh session of the high commission for cooperation between the two countries.
In the statement, the two leaders “expressed deep concern about the sources of conflict and instability in Africa and the Middle East,” deploring “the heavy human losses, the huge material damage, the displacement of civilians and the resulting complex humanitarian crises.”
After expressing “their unconditional support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to an independent and sovereign state on the borders of 1967, with Al- Quds as capital, in line with the international law and UN resolutions,” the two leaders called for “an immediate end to impunity and injustice.”
They emphasised “the imperative need to implement the decisions of the International Court of Justice to establish a lasting peace in the region,” stressing “the need to hold to account those responsible for war crimes and genocide.” They also “called on the international community to uphold the principles of international law and avoid double standards in the dispensation of justice.”
The two leaders discussed a “number of regional and international issues of common interest,” expressing “their shared commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue, mediation, negotiations and respect for the sovereignty of States and the strengthening of the African peace and security architecture.”
They emphasised “the necessity to support the African Union within the framework of its founding principles and the pan-African spirit,” while “reiterating their commitment to work in close collaboration to allow the African Union and its different bodies to find African solutions to African problems.”
They also recognised “Algeria’s role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2024-2025,” stressing “the importance of using this UN forum to defend African causes, including the strengthening of peace, security and justice in Africa.”
“In line with their shared vision of consolidating African unity and in favour of African solutions, the two presidents exchanged views on a number of topical issues.”
They called for a “comprehensive UN reform, mainly the Security Council, for a fair representation of Africa and other less represented regions,” underlining “the urgent need to achieve unity and cohesion in Africa’s ongoing reform efforts, in line with the principles and goals enshrined in the African Union’ Constitution.”
The president of the Republic and his South-African counterpart underlined “the leadership of Algeria, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2024-2025,” stressing “the key role it is playing to advance Africa’s priorities, put an end to the historical injustice done to the continent and strengthen its voice on international issues.”
