Tyson Fury has announced that he’s preparing to go into ‘destruction mode’ against Ukrainian fighter, Usyk, when they meet December 21 in Riyadh.
Fury lost his first fight to Usyk by split decision. Usyk went on to unify all the heavyweight titles.
“The last time I went to fight him, I was careful. I gave him a beating,” Fury told TNT Sports on Saturday. “Let’s talk facts. Anyone can get caught, as we’ve seen in a lot of heavyweight fights, but this time I’m not going for a points decision,” said the Briton.
The boxing world is eagerly awaiting the heavyweight title rematch between the two fighters. When they met in May, Usyk did something that hadn’t been done since Lennox Lewis in 2000: he unified the WBC, WBO and WBA titles. The triple crown is on the line once again. And the fight is more open than ever. In the first round, Usyk was able to overcome the fast pace set by Fury in the opening rounds.
From the eighth round, Usyk dominated, turning the fight around and convincing the judges to award him the victory. Fury wasn’t happy with the decision and is now promising a rematch where he won’t hold back in his quest for a convincing victory.
Usyk is always more reserved than the Briton and tends to keep quiet in the months and weeks leading up to fights. Usyk ended Fury’s unbeaten streak and that hurt the Brit’s pride. Now Fury is determined to regain his pride, status and titles.
Everything is set for the fight of the year on December 21 in Riyadh. However, it seems Fury isn’t just thinking about that. He continues to be asked about facing fellow countryman Anthony Joshua, a long-awaited fight that has yet to take place.
Despite Joshua’s recent setback in losing his IBF title to Daniel Dubois, promoters still see the commercial potential in a Fury-Joshua showdown.
In response to a question from TNT Sports about the possibility, Fury was open to the idea: “At the end of the day, it would be a tragedy if we didn’t do the fight. It doesn’t matter if he loses 20 more fights. If he never wins another fight and stays out of the ring for 10 years, it doesn’t matter, we have to fight,” he said.
There have been several attempts to schedule a fight between the two, including when it was billed as the ‘Battle of Britain’ in 2022, but it was called off. Since then, commitments from both fighters have prevented it from happening. Fury is busy fighting Usyk in 2024, which means he can’t fight Joshua.
There could be several developments in the coming months. If Usyk beats Fury again, the short-term scenario could lead to two big fights: the long-awaited Fury vs Joshua fight and a possible defence of Usyk’s title against Dubois.
