Rose Amoaniwaa Yeboah delivered Ghana’s first gold medal in track and field yesterday at the ongoing 13th African Games at the University of Ghana Sports Complex.
The former University of Cape Coast (UCC) student cleared the bar at 1.90m to win the female high jump event.
It fell short of her remarkable 1.94m jump that won her gold at the FISU World University Games 2023 but was enough to earn her the ultimate at the high profile meet in Accra.
She attempted to better her jump with an optional trial, but was unsuccessful. That, however, did not stop her from celebrating her feat.
Draped in the national colours, she took a lap of honour to acknowledge cheers from the fans who responded by waving their flags.
Her win was a morale booster for Team Ghana and the fans as well after Benjamin Azamati and Barnabas Aggerh failed in their medal bids in the men 100m finals.
They placed fifth and sixth respectively in the event dominated by Cameroon and Nigeria.
