A sod cutting ceremony was yesterday performed to commence the construction of a 14-seater lavatory facility for the Dawhenya Methodist Basic ‘A’ School in Accra.
The project, which will be completed within two months is expected to bring to a halt, the concern of indiscriminate open defecation being practiced by the pupils, due to the inadequate toilet facility for more than 1,000 pupil population.
It is being funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), following a signing of a $34,000 dollar Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)between the school and KOICA, targeted at improving the education environment of the school.
The Country Director for KOICA,Mr. Mooheon Kong, addressing the pupils, teachers and traditional leaders said many public schools within the Dawhenya District had benefitted from similar project.
“We strongly believe this MoU helps our partnership grow. We are particularly looking forward to the implementation of this project which will include the construction of a health and hygiene facility.
“Additionally, a project was started in the Dawhenya Methodist cluster of schools by a volunteer from Korea named Mr. Han. As a result, the school is now fenced and has a playground inside. Also, a 14-seater lavatory facility has been a benefit to the Abbey Korpe D/A Basic School just less than six months ago” Mr Kong said.
The District Director Of Education, Mrs Sarah Adibrosu, said majority of the schools in the district lacked restroom facilities, a situation she said had become a major concern for heads of the schools.
She said the absence of a lavatory facility denied some students the opportunity to sometimes come to school since a place of convenience was lacking.
The Head teacher of Dawhenya Methodist Basic ‘A’ School, Mrs Regina Amegah, expressed profound gratitude to KOICA for coming to the aid of the school, and assured them of proper maintainace culture of the project.
