Three individuals, Albert Nii Tetteh, Wisdom Kortorshi and Richard Osei have been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding Alpha Lotto Company Limited, a private lottery operator, of GH?160,000 through a sophisticated scam.
The accused – Albert Tetteh and Wisdom Kortorshi, both sub-lotto agents and Richard Osei, a phone repairer – pleaded not guilty to charges of defrauding by false pretence.
Presiding Judge, Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit, denied their bail application and remanded them into lawful custody.
The defense counsel argued that the accused had already spent over six days in custody, exceeding legal limits.
He described them as cooperative with police investigations and breadwinners for their families, urging the court to grant them bail, emphasising that they posed no flight risk.
The prosecution strongly opposed the bail request, stating that investigations were still ongoing and that granting bail could jeopardise efforts to apprehend a fourth suspect who is currently on the run.
The court upheld the prosecution’s concern, directing investigators to expedite the case to avoid unnecessary delays.
The accused are set to reappear in court on November 27, 2024.
Case Details
According to court documents, the complainant, Michael Tetteh, an agent of Alpha Lotto, resides in Abelemkpe, while Albert Nii Tetteh (A1), Wisdom Kortorshi (A3) and Richard Osei (A2) reside in Teshie, Dansoman and Accra High Street respectively.
In April 2024, Nii Tetteh allegedly conspired with Osei, who claimed to have a method to fraudulently manipulate lottery results.
The three met at Nii Tetteh’s office and plotted a scheme to enrich themselves, by inserting falsified winning tickets into secure, locked bags containing legitimate tickets.
Using this method, the accused successfully defrauded Alpha Lotto twice.
Thus, in April, they secured GH?70,000 which they shared among themselves (GH?20,000 each to Tetteh and Osei and GH?30,000 to Kortorshi). In August, they repeated the fraud, obtaining GH?90,000.
On November 14, 2024 their attempt to claim GH?300,000 was foiled, leading to their arrest.
Investigators revealed that the accused admitted to the crimes during caution statements.
The court was told that police are intensifying efforts to track down the fourth accused. However, the court has urged law enforcement to ensure a swift resolution to the case, with the accused facing their next hearing in eight days.
