Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged his players to earn the right to dream of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory by focusing first on qualifying for the 2027 tournament. Ghana have not lifted the continental title since 1982, despite reaching the finals in 1992, 2010 and 2015, and their recent record has added to the pressure. The four-time African champions exited at the group stage in the last two AFCON tournaments they qualified for before failing to reach the 2025 edition in Morocco. As Ghana prepare to begin their 2027 qualifying campaign later this month, Queiroz has called for realism alongside ambition. "We must have ambition, but also humility," he told the Ghana FA website. "We know our recent history, and we cannot talk about winning AFCON when we have not yet qualified. "We have to work, grow, compete and earn our destiny." The 73-year-old's side open their Group C campaign with a difficult away fixture against Côte d'Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September. They will then return to the Accra Sports Stadium to face The Gambia on 27 September before rounding off the international window with a friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on 4 October. The Black Stars have already opened camp in Accra as preparations intensify for the three fixtures, with Queiroz aiming to make a strong start to his latest spell in charge of Ghana.
