The National Sports Authority has dismissed allegations of financial impropriety surrounding renovation works at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after a viral video sparked criticism over the condition of the playing surface.
In a statement issued by its Ashanti Regional Directorate, the Authority said the footage showed staff carrying out routine maintenance as part of preparations for the 2026/27 football season.
It noted that comments accompanying the video questioned the methods being used and alleged financial misconduct, claims it firmly rejected.
According to the Authority, the stadium's pitch has gradually become infested with invasive weeds and undesirable grass species since it was regrassed six years ago.
While periodic weed control has been undertaken over the years, it said the current off-season presents the best opportunity to carry out a comprehensive renovation programme aimed at restoring a healthy and uniform natural grass surface.
The NSA explained that the maintenance programme includes selective weed control using approved weedicides, mowing the pitch to the recommended height, manual removal of weeds, top dressing with carefully selected alluvial sand to improve drainage and surface levels, and re-establishing grass in renovated areas through new seeding.
The Authority stressed that the works form part of a planned preventative maintenance programme and reflect internationally recognised best practices in natural pitch management.
It added that undertaking the exercise during the off-season allows sufficient recovery time before competitive fixtures resume, reaffirming its commitment to providing a safe, durable and high-quality playing surface for all users.
