Ghana international Andre Ayew has explained the thinking behind his move to Dutch outfit NAC Breda, describing it as a fresh challenge at a competitive level.
The 36-year-old joined the Eredivisie side in January on a short-term deal running until the end of the season, having been without a club for six months following his departure from Le Havre AC.
In an interview with ESPN, Ayew said the decision to head to the Netherlands was driven by his desire to continue competing at a high standard and to test himself in a new environment.
"I am a footballer, and I always want to play at the highest level. The Dutch league is a very good league, technically, physicallyâ¦," he said.
Ayew added that he was seeking a project where belief was shared between player and club, similar to what he experienced during his time in France.
"I was looking at challenging myself again, like I did in Le Havre the last two years, where I could bring something to the table and where the belief is mutual from both sides."
The former Black Stars captain also stressed the importance of feeling wanted â not only by the club’s hierarchy but by the supporters.
"The club has big objectives for now and the future, and for me, it was important to feel the desire from the club, from the coach, which was very important and the fan base. I am a player who plays a lot with energy, and the fans behind me, so when you are in a club where you have a good fan base and a stadium that makes noise, it’s better for me," he added.
Since arriving at NAC Breda, Ayew has made six league appearances, starting once as he works his way back to full match rhythm.
