Former Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston has described Mohammed Salisu’s anterior cruciate ligament injury as a major setback for the Black Stars, stressing the defender’s importance to the national team.
Salisu is facing a long spell on the sidelines after AS Monaco confirmed he had torn his ACL, an injury that could rule him out of action for several months and place his availability for the 2026 World Cup in doubt.
Reacting to the development on TV3, Kingston said the absence of the 26-year-old centre-back would be keenly felt in Ghana’s defence.
“It’s a very big blow for us because he is such an important figure at the back. When you talk about experienced players in our back line, I think he’s one of them, and it’s going to be a very big blow for us,” Kingston said.
The former Black Stars midfielder also used the opportunity to encourage the current squad to remain calm and focused despite the setback, urging players to take responsibility and step up when called upon.
“My advice to the current players is that they should just relax and focus. You have to play whether you like it or not. The more minutes you play, the more competitive you become, and the more your form picks up,” he added.
Salisu has been a key part of Ghana’s defence in recent years, bringing experience from European football and playing a central role in World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. Hd has scored four goals in 22 appearances for Ghana since his debut in 2022.
