Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola may have a significant decision to make over his future if the club choose to cash in on Antoine Semenyo in January, according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley.
Semenyo has a £65 million release clause and is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, raising the possibility of another major departure just months after Bournemouth sold three key defenders in the summer.
Speaking to Football Insider, Plumley said Iraola will be assessing how the club’s transfer strategy aligns with his ambitions.
“We probably have to track that back a little bit further and look at all within this summer,” Plumley explained. “They sold three out of four of their main defenders. Good fees, but they lost a lot of their back line, and they’ve had to rebuild a little bit.”
“Semenyo is the next one,” he continued. “So the manager is probably looking at that. But, of course, there are other things that the club are doing. They opened up a new training facility recently, which was state of the art.”
Plumley said Bournemouth remain a stable Premier League presence, but repeated sales of first-team players could force Iraola to reconsider his position.
“They’re one of those clubs at the minute that appear to be a stable Premier League club, and I think there’s a lot to be said for that,” he noted. “Now if they get into a model of selling players at good fees, then the manager’s going to have to decide how that fits with his philosophy, and he might want a move elsewhere as well.”
He added that the manager’s future is tied to both the club’s finishing position and Semenyo’s status during the January window. “There’s always timing within this, and Semenyo is one of those. But he’s also looking at how the season will play out and where they end up in the league as well.”
Bournemouth’s six-game winless run in the Premier League, capped by a 0-0 draw with Chelsea, has seen them slip to 13th, though they remain just five points off the European places. Last season’s ninth-place finish raised expectations, but losing Semenyo mid-season, combined with a lower league finish, could be decisive in shaping Iraola’s next move.
Semenyo has been one of Bournemouth’s standout performers, scoring six times this season and remaining central to their attacking output.
