WAFCON 2024: Morocco reach semi-final after beating Mali 3-1; await winner of tie between Ghana and Algeria
Morocco advanced to the semi-final of the 2024 CAF Womens Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday night after a deserved 3-1 victory against Mali.The host nation locked horns with their quarter-final opponent today in a game played at Stade Olympique de Rabat.For a place in the last four stage, Morocco wasted no time after kickoff and scored in the 7th minute of the first half to take control of the match.Star striker Ibtissam Jraidi opened the scoring after she was set up by winger Sakina Ouzraoui Diki with an inviting low cross.Morocco went on to dominate but could not score before the break. Mali, on the other hand, managed to equalise in the 37th minute. Unfortunately, the goal was ruled out for offside.After recess, Morocco continued to dominate, although Mali improved on their first-half performance.In the 79th minute, Ibtissam Jraidi converted a penalty kick to make it a brace on the night. Later in the 89th minute, Kenza Chapelle also equalised to make it 3-0 for the host.Although Mali pulled one back through Aissata Traore in the dying minutes, it only served as a consolation goal.The delightful victory has propelled Morocco to the semi-final of the 2024 WAFCON. They will face the winner of the quarter-final encounter between Ghana and Algeria.
