KKMA, Centre for National Culture launches first edition of CAFEST

Tema, Jan 01, GNA - The Centre for National Culture under the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly has launched its maiden Creative Festival on Sustainable Development Goals (CAFEST) to educate the public on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The initiative is expected to be an annual competition among the various Junior High Schools in Kpone.

Miss Sandra Boison, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Cultural Officer, speaking on the theme, “Using Culture as a Vehicle to Promote Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs) 3,6,8 and 9, " said the event was to educate the Junior High School students on how to localize the SDGs to promote development.

She stated that the programme would use cultural activities including drama, chorography and poetry to promote sustainable development.

Miss Boison said the Centre for National Culture would serve as a platform to educate the public especially  children, as they were the future leaders of the country, to take advantage and benefit from the SDGs.

She said the young ones, if well informed could also influence their peers, parents and siblings to practice healthy lifestyles as well as correct them on bad attitudes in relation to sanitation in Ghana.

She said SDGs 3, 6, 8 and 9 were selected because it touched on good health and well being, clean water, sanitation,  promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all Ghanaians and reducing inequality within the countries respectively.

According to her, the SDGs report showed that sanitation issues in the country were not improving and that Ghana had failed in this area during the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.

She indicated that “we have not been able to deal with open defecation and filth has engulfed the country over the years, time has shown that the situation is getting worse because of our attitudes and we must  change because the risk of dying prematurely of cholera, typhoid, malaria and diarrhea is still high in Ghana”

She said the centre was touched to organize  the  CAFEST  due to the report of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children Fund 2014  which ranked Ghana 10th  and in 2015, Ghana was rated the 7th most unsanitary country.

She also said it was the mission of the KKMA to bridge the gap between the implementers and the citizens in the implementation of SDGs as it could never be achieved with such division.

Miss Boison explained that it was by working together that Ghanaians could achieve a world with equal opportunities for all and make Ghana a better place to live in.
