Takoradi, July 29, GNA - A day's training workshop on road signs and regulations, vehicle tyres and general vehicle maintenance has been for drivers and other stakeholders in the western region, over the weekend.
The workshop, organized by the National Road Safety Commission, in collaboration with Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), was on the theme "promoting best road safety practices for all categories of road users".
Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, President of the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) Ghana, pointed out that, the workshop was organized to educate drivers on the need to observe road signs and maintain their vehicles regularly, all geared towards reducing the rate of accidents in the region in particular and the country in general.
Mr. Boakye cautioned drivers to be mindful that anytime they use the road, they are sharing it with other road users and should therefore be careful and considerate.
He said OSHA, which is a UK based organization, was partnering the workshop because it appreciates the importance of road safety and the need to educate the public on it.
Mr Boakye urged drivers to always check their tyres, its temperature resistance, traction tread and wear, manufacturing date, speed symbol and the load capacity of the tyres before purchasing.
He also advised them to endeavour to check the pressure of their tyres, brake fluid, oil change, replacing of air filter and fuse, checking and filling various fluids levels as well as changing bulbs and lights, when necessary, before starting their vehicles.
He cautioned drivers to avoid needless overtaking, speeding and other practices that could put the lives of other road users at risk.
Mr. Emanuel Parry, Regional Head of OSHA pointed out that, obeying road signs, avoiding overloading and wrongful overtaking were key to curb motor accidents.
He explained that the signs on the road informs and instructs users as to how best to use the road at any particular point in time.
Participants at the workshop expressed their gratitude to OSHA for organizing the programme and said the knowledge gained was going to be of great use, not just for them, but also the general public.
